I would like to know how do I keep from losing my horse because after I go to a town, leave my horse at a near by stable, close the gate or gates to keep him inside the fenced area, and go and start exploring around near the town or go in the town for the day, then when I go back to the stable for example in Skingrad, I fond both gates open and my horse is not their, and I have checked all around but could not find him!

Well, NPCs are pretty lazy about closing the fence gates behind them. It might explain why the gates were open. Random wandering might explain the rest... but it seems like you'd need to be gone a long time for the horse to get that far away.

Anyways, it sounds like since you wandered around the area, you didn't fast-travel in the process. Whenever you fast travel, your horse is supposed to show up at the city gate. I'd suggest trying that. Fast Travel to another town and then back, then check any and all city gates.

If that doesn't work, I don't know what's going wrong. Just let us know anything else you notice and we'll go from there.

If your horse is Shadowmere, it does dissapear occasionally. You will find it again some time later at the place you got it - forgot its name.

Try the advice that DM gave you, that’s the only solution I can think of…

That’s a pain when Shadowmere does that...

If your horse is Shadowmere, and is lost, try at Fort Farragut. That's where you first got her.

I'm pretty sure all horses go to where you first got them. So if all else fails, look in those stables.
