I'm revisiting Morrowind (and there's much about it that is still terrific) but...

The first time I go to sleep I'm assassinated.  Don't know why or by whom: this happens even if I take a sleep near to Seyda Neen, before doing anything questionable of any kind.  Sometimes beforehand I meet an elf-ish type who accuses me of "betraying the clan".  Sometimes the assassin appears while I'm awake.

I've got Better Bodies, MCA plus patches, Nymeria's Faster Walking, and Libraries of Vvardenfell running quite happily (or so it appears) on GOTY.

Can anyone suggest why this is happening, or some way of dealing with it?

I'm not sure who the "elf-ish type" is so someone else needs to help you with that... but:

The assassins are the start of the Tribunal main quest.

To stop them from happening, kill one and then speak to a guard who will tell you what to do. If you can't kill one of them, just reload from before you rested and try again, because they don't attack every time you sleep.

At low levels I usually sleep in the Fighter's guild in Balmora or somewhere that has bunk beds lined up like that. If an assassin tries to get to you he will be stuck inside the bed and unable to attack. This is cheating of course. Wink

If you are lucky, you can defeat them. I succeeded even with my Argonian mage that lacked any specific armor capabilities to defend himself. It does take some trial and error, but I use quick load/quick save in Morrowind quite frequently anyway.

Also, the armor of those assassins can be sold for quite a money at Creeper's place, which makes start of the game much easier in terms of finance.

on the xbox you get attacked the first time you sleep after level 6, on the pc you get attacked the first time you sleep after you install tribunal, sense you have the GoTY edition you already have tribunal installed.
