Is it possible to recharge an empty soul gem? I figured it must be because shops will buy my empty ones from me for a pretty good price. If you can recharge them, how do you do it? Is it worth it or should I just buy new full ones? Also if not what use is an empty one? Thanks for your help.

Get the spell Soul Trap (I think I got it in Chorrol but I can't remember really), cast it on the enemy you want to trap and kill it before the timer runs out (mine is 20 seconds).
Remember that you have to have an empty soul gem in your inventory while killing the enemy, and the soul gem has to be able to hold the soul. Petty soul gems can only hold petty souls, lesser soul gems can hold lesser and petty, and so on up to grand that can hold anything.

Cool, thanks for the help. My charicter only has experience in destruction spells and restoration spells though. Does soul trap fall under those classes or can anyone use it?

Just like all the skill anyone can use it. Soul Trap is illusion I belive but dont quote me on that
anway once you trap a soul in the gem you cant use the gem again its goes poof! the Only exception to this rule is the Artifact Azura's Star

I have been enchanting my items with regular ( i guess empty ) soul gems. Do you get additional power from a soul gem when it is filled?

The more powerful Monster you trap in a soul gem the higher Recharge power & Enchantable power it gets.
I trapped a Deadroth Soul in a Greater soul gem and it could charge up to 1200 points.
