...that gives me the freedom to make a character with a role similar to mine in Oblivion:

I'd like to wield close-ranged frost spells while covered in heavy armor and hiding behind a shield.  Does anyone know of a single player RPG or MMO that would allow me to?

I'm aware that WoW is about to add the Death Night in, which could technically do that, but I'd rather not go back to WoW.  I played WoW nonstop for te first two years after it came out, and left because I got disgusted by Blizzard.  I've bounced around between MMOs and Single Player RPGs, but nothing has really been able to capture me since.  The freedom to make the character that i really want to play would go a long way towards making me stick to a game for once.

It's a long shot, but there's Runescape. I don't recommend it, though. It's not very good after you've played for a couple months and beaten everything.  You can't even kill other players unless you've upgraded your account for 5 dollars.

I might give it a try, I'm about that desperate.  No offense meant to anyone who plays Runescape, but it really doesn't sound like my cup of tea.  Thanks for the tip, though; I'll at least give it a shot.

I loved Runescape for a couple of years that I've played. The gameplay is pretty cool for an online browser game and it's it's your typical medieval mages/knights/archers type of thing, too. It can be fun for a while, but not after you've completed every single quest in the free-to-play. There use to be an area called the wilderness, where you could go to player-kill and loot items, but for some stupid reason they've disabled it. Then, really, there was no point for me to keep playing at all. Nothing to do, unless you upgrade. Then you've got a whole new world to explore...

They are out to get your money, after all.  I have Guild Wars (the Factions campaign only), so I'm going to try to make a W/E (Warrior primary, Elementalist secondary) character.  I don't think I'll enjoy repeating the Factions storyline, but at least I'll get my armored spellslinger fix when I get it far enough to pick up the secondary class.

Don't know much about browser games, Runescape included. Never played them, and didn't hear much good about them to be honest.

There are many 3D games that are free to play, if you are looking for such thing. RF Online, Silkroad and a number of others. Although I never tried any of those.

Of what I tried, and played for a significant amount of time... Anarchy Online, Lineage 2, WoW, City of Villains and (recently) Age of Conan. Conan's the newest, and has most detailed graphics of all, but gameplay is dull and support pretty much lacking, given that many obvious technical issues and bugs were still present in 2,5 months after game release. My 1-month subscription ended, and I didn't prolong it.

Comparing other games that I played, City of Villains (now merged with City of Heroes, but I played only on the villain side) is the best in terms of gameplay. WoW has great world and music (same can be said about Lineage), but gameplay is relatively slow-paced and less versatile than in City.

And there's Warhammer Online... only several months remain until this game is released, and some say that it's WoW killer... I don't believe in WoW killers anymore, since this game is immortal, but WAR seems a solid game to try.

none of the above may suit you

the best single player rpg for heavy armour with frost spells is Fate by Wildtangent.
Fate is like Diablo but the levels are endless. The graphics are more fun than diablo and the monsters and characters are rendered in great detail with bright colours.

The hero in Fate can have pets and he can go fishing but the biggest standout for Fate is that the fighting is intense and just gets more hectic. Spellcasting is as challenging as Diablo but its in even closer quarters.

For your type of build ther eis a specific set of heavy armour types plus the frost ring blast spell sets. Fate is one of my most favourite rpgers and is probably the No 1 pur single player rpg in the marketplace today.

Its also much tinier and less cpu intensive than the other big guns. hope u can try it out (they have a demo Tongue)

feel free to ask more questions. ive played it quite a bit.

For everyone who enjoyed Runescape for the PvP, just wanted to let you know they are launching PvP servers soon, with basically "wilderness" everywhere, just like in the beginning. Smiley

I'm currently checking Fate out...  It doesn't look very good so far, but I'll keep going with an open mind.
