If you use firefox, you can hold the control key and use the scroll wheel on your mouse to make the text larger. I usually also highlight the text as I read it, which seems to help. (ctrl+0 will reset the text to normal size).
Unfortunately, there's nothing much you can do about Oblivion books except maybe read them online, outside the game. The
Imperial Library seems to have quite a few books available. It might even have them all by now.
