I started Morrowind couple months ago and after realizing its harder to master than oblivion, im starting to wonder... why didnt they make oblivion this great? The extra quests they put in it are great fillers inbetween big quests. So well why abandon it?

Consoles

Edit: I know Morrowind was on Xbox too, I just like to blame everything on consoles. Smiley

Still, trying to appeal to more consumers by dumbing the game down is a source of many of the... "inferior" elements of Oblivion. The menu system isn't as good as it could have been because they wanted the menu to work exactly the same way for the consoles and the PC even though, with more buttons and versatility, the PC menu could have been much more advanced and user-friendly. They instituted leveled creatures in order to keep your enemies evenly matched at all times. This is meant to keep it easy for low-level noobs and not let it get too easy once you're high-level. It sorta defeats part of the purpose of dynamic character creation and leveling from a role-playing standpoint. You want to level up to improve your character so you can defeat enemies that you couldn't before... not to see new enemies because the last ones are getting redundant.

As for the side-quests... there are still plenty of side-quests, even if you don't count the guilds or the shrines. Not as many nor as long but they are still in there. In part, I think it had a lot to do with the urgency of the main quest. Since you can do quests in any order, you have to keep in mind that the Oblivion crisis might not be over when the quest is taken. Why should you allow the player to collect herbs for gold instead of stopping the demonic invasion of the world? In Morrowind, the threat was just as real but you could take your time at it because it was more about 'investigating' things before you find out what to do and how. If it takes you 5 game years to beat the main quest, the outcome is the same as if you finish in a week. Leaving Oblivion gates open all over the place seems like the entire world would end within a matter of days, so even rushing through the main quest seems too casual at times.

I wouldn't really consider it worse, just different. There were different goals and challenges in making this game than there were for Morrowind. It was also a pretty different environment. Culture clash and inequalities were quite evident in the land of the dunmer. Except for the invasion, Cyrodiil was pretty bland an peaceful, comparatively. Hopefully they learn from what didn't work or wasn't as popular and make the next one using the best of both games and exceeding them both, as usual.

morrowind main story line is way beter than oblivion, however, the sory consist of more protector of Tameriel compared to morrowind, like sstop the siege wep from going thru the great gate, and on top of that i got sick of doing oblivion gates for its was too long and the treasure wasnt even great, except for the daederic weapons and armour.

Well, it could also be due to the fact that Bethesda fully voice acted everything, which meant that might have had to spend more money if they added more quests.
