While Bethesda's Fallout 3 has already hit the shelves in most regions of the world, and performs well with very good reviews, speculations grow on what future projects the studio might be working on.

Todd Howard, Bethesda's executive producer, said the following to Reuters (link not available): "I think it's good for people to miss things. Ten years between 'Fallout' is a bit long, but I think there's this nostalgia factor." In the same interview, Howard also suggests that 3 years is a "good time frame" between games, leading many reviewers to a conclusion that Fallout 4 is scheduled to come in 2011.

Right now there is no officially confirmed information on Bethesda working on either Fallout 4 or TES V. What we can be sure about is that one of those games is already in development, and according to recent Gameindustry.biz article, it is likely to be the next TES game and not Fallout. Gameindustry.biz quotes Paul Oughton, publishing executive for Bethesda:

"At the moment we've got Fallout 3 for this year and potentially there's a new Elder Scrolls title in 2010," said Oughton. "At the moment we're not that interested in the Wii. We're going to stick to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. We'll continue to pursue three or four titles a year and go for big titles," he said of the company's publishing plans for the future.

Does Bethesda has enough resources to develop two large role-playing games in completely different worlds simultaneously, by two internal teams, or they are going to split the development cycles? Time will tell, and within the next year we are expecting announcements that will bring more light on Bethesda's future plans.

Though there have been erroneous rumors that PS4 would come out in 2008 (quite obviously not going to happen) there have been some 'recent' articles (Aug '08) that the next generation of console wars could come as soon as 2011-2012. They could easily be wrong yet again, but if they aren't that would put TES4 at the end of this generation of consoles and Fallout 4 at the forefront of the next.

It could make a lot of sense, as Bethesda wouldn't want to delay TESV up to 2 years just waiting for the newest console. After all, PC (which has no well defined tech-gen gaps) seems to be the favored platform for TES fans (well, me) and if it's released at the end of this console generation (yet well before the next is in sight) then the maximum number of households will have one of the systems to purchase the game for. On the other hand, Fallout 4 would be able to take full advantage of being released at the leading edge of the next console war.

Since I'm on the PC, I don't care where the consoles stand in regards to TES5 but what's good for Bethesda is good for the future of our beloved game series'. As long as they continue to do what they do best and get these games right, we'll probably be happy with the results. Here's hoping.

hmmm...Busy busy people...
I'd think over 50% of Oblivion gamers are PC friendly as I am still thorughly enjoying Oblivion, I may delay buying Fallout3 also the price and the rating is stopping me.
I do not think there will be another XBOX console till 2012 possibly as they are still selling well.
