Never used mods before...

I've never used mods in a game before and I cant figure out how to change a file from a 'rar' to a zip or something that will allow me to use the mod. Everywhere I look they are mostly all these rar files and I dunno what that actually is. Im not the smartest when it comes to things other then gaming and fixing the odd thing or two. So dont think im stupid...Ive just never delt with any files like this.
Any help on how to change these things would be great.

You'll need Winrar or 7zip to unpack those rar files.
