I am thinking about buying Half-Life 2 for my PC. Maybe Half-Life 2 Game of the Year. People who have the game or have played it, is it worth buying it?

If you like first person shooters then it's worth it.

If you want to waste money on a very short box-standard non-innovative (except for the gravity gun which are mercilessly used to the point of annoyance) boring FPS game then yes by all means go buy it.

Steam has it's good and it's bad. Yeah, it's annoying to register and it feels pretty intrusive that you have to be registered (and logged in for online games) just to play. On the other hand, if you lose your CDs you can just download the entire game back onto your computer. I still have 2-3 games linked to my account, including Half-Life 1, that I can just install any old time I feel like it. It also updates all the games automatically for you. They offer "trial" versions of certain games 'free' so you'll be more likely to buy them later.
Unless you're an avid software pirate, steam is at least 50% a good thing, and it's very good for the makers of steam. They have almost complete control of their game licenses now. If you have a 'cracked' version, they can more easily detect it. If you try to run the same game on 2 different computers at once they can stop you and if/when you finally give up and just buy the games legally they make it fast and easy.
As for the game itself, it's not too bad. Interesting gravity physics an such. I only played the first level using the trial version. Instead of getting the full game, I got a boxed stand alone version of Day of Defeat 2 (based on the HL2 engine). It's almost identical to it's predecessor except with better graphics and physics. Still a blast to play. I highly recomend it. (especially over CounterStrike, the faster, bouncier, less realistic sister of DoD2)

I liked playing Half life two, purely for the physics. Also using Garrys mod with it is quite fun. beyond the physics theres not much there, unless you LOOOVE pointless killing then try DOD2 or HL2 Deathmatch
