As long as online gaming is becoming more popular, there are lots of interesting RPGs that are played in single... the most obvious examples are, of course, Elder Scrolls games.

So, apart from Oblivion (that hasn't yet been released so you can't call it favourite yet), what are your favourite singleplayer role-playing games? What games you consider the best? Don't stick only to TES please, and don't exclude games that might be played both single and in multiplayer - for example, Diablo II. And no restrictions for release year; as we all know, not many good games of this kind are being released these days.

Metal Gear Solid!!! One of the best game series I've ever played. And they all have pretty good plots (MGS 2 especially).

Another is Star Wars Empire at War which is a great game for strategy gamers.

Wouldn't as such call the MGS series for RPGs, but that might just be me.  Tongue

Favorite RPGs:

Albion - Great story and fascinating world. Smiley

Arx Fatalis - If you liked the old Ultima Underworld games, you'll most likely also like this one.  Smiley

Baldur's Gate 2 - Just great.

Dark Sun 1+2 - Oldies set in the AD&D setting Dark Sun. Picture BG2 with ugly graphics, bad sound, and buggy.  Wink

Eye of The Beholder 1+2 - Again some old AD&D classics.

Might & Magic 6-9 - They're great! Hmm, what else to say? They're great!

Chrono Trigger has been my favorite game, let alone RPG game ever since it came out in '95 on the SNES and probably always will be my favorite. If you haven't played it I highly recommend this game, you won't be dissapointed!

Appart from that and Morrowind + other TES titles my other favorite single player RPG's are, in order; Diablo II, Secret of Mana (also for SNES and similar to Chrono Trigger), Neverwinter Nights, and Dungeon Siege II.. that's pretty much all I can think of off hand at the moment.. though there are others.

rpg's like zelda are oldskool precious, eve-online for sheer "gallactasphere awe", and slightly left of centre here is www.wagerisland.com.  all good in their own little ways, but i haven't got the time for any these days-just a little here and there keeps the feeling alive ¶:>

System Shock 2 (possibly my all time favourite game)
Albion (though I never got very far in that one)
TES (of course)
Wizardry 8
Might & Magic 7 (6 and 8 too but 7 is my favourite)
Diablo 1 and 2 (though they're not really real RPGs I spent alot of time playing them)
Castle Of The Winds 1 and 2 (I first played it on Win3.1 on a b/w monitor and I still like it)

There are probably more but that's all I can think of at the moment...

Edit: And Dungeon Siege, just the original, haven't played 2
Edit2: Doh! How could I ever forget about the Fallouts!

The Elder Scrolls III, of course. Didn't play previous TES games, unfortunately.

And... what else did I like? I guess only one worth mentioning is

Neverwinter Nights

Well, that's all.

Crono, you mentioned you like Secret of Mana. You absolutely MUST download and play Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2). I'm not sure how much you know about emulators so if you already know this stuff then my apologies. I figured I would post it anyway.

Have a look here

Download the ROM (game)here

download ZNES (the best SNES emulator)

hehe I actually own both Secret of Mana 1 and 2 on SNES, and yes they are absolutely brilliant games, second to only Chrono Trigger =p

Can anyone say Fallout? Easily my favorite game of all time. There was just so much game there for its time.

Other than that, I like the standards, FF IV, VI, VIII and X. Crono Trigger. Super Mario RPG. Starocean 2. Dragon Quest/Warrior I-IV.

On the pc side again, Diablo 2 has probably gotten more playtime than anything else. But, Neverwinter Nights, Baldurs Gate 2, and Ultima/Ultima Online have all gotten some good playtime.

In theory I could say Fallout. But it would be more appropriate in a thread called "Worst Singleplayer RPGs"  Tongue

Oh yeah, forgot all about these RPGs:

Amberstar, The Temple of Elemental Evil, Pool of Radiance 1+2, Ultima 1-9, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, Dark Queen of Krynn, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, Pools of Darkness, and Whale's Voyage.

Doh, also forgot about Ishar 1-3. Silly me. Roll Eyes

Yep, each to their own. Smiley

I liked the old AD&D RPGs, the first  RPGs I ever played actually, yeah, sure there are other RPGs there are better. Actually a lot, but I still like them. I don't like Fallout. Don't even have anything nice to say about really. Except maybe that it isn't installed on my hard drive. Tongue

Diablo 2 is one of the best non-TES-RPGs I have been playing. Not that many quests, and the movement seems pathetic now, but that game had so much in it. So many different items, creatures, and it was fun. Not better than new games, but I love it....

Agreed. Diablo II is deffinately a timeless classic. The hours I spent beating that game with every character, including the expansion characters, just to see what kind of items I could gather add up to more than any other game ive ever played I think, except maybe Chrono Trigger.

I really enjoyed the entire Baldur's Gate series and obviously the Elder Scrolls, I also like Summoner which has a great plot twist. Probably one of my favourite games of all time would be Planescape: Torment it was a brilliant game with a really original storyline.

WOW!!

Nobody mentioned GothicI or GothicII???

I gotta tell yall, those two games, especially GothicII are some of the best rpgs I've ever played, my list is as follows.

1. GothicII and Morrowind are tied.
2. Oblivion.
3. Arcanum.
4. Fable.
5. Neverwinter Knights. (it would have been number three but it just didn't work good on my pc)
6. DiabloI and II
7. Arx Fatalis. (could have been better but it was pretty cool)
8. The Zelda for super nintendo, I don't remember the name been to long.
9. The other DnD games, like Temple of Elemental Evil.
10. Umm, can't think of to much more. Maybe Dungeon Seige?

Seriously though, yall need to play GothicII if you have'nt already, it owns.

1~ TES III : Morrowind
2~ TES IV : Oblivion
3~ Beyond the Beyond (PSX) -> The first RPG I ever played--how could I not look back and love it?
4~ The Temple of Elemental Evil
5~ Xenogears (PSX) -> Packed over 250 hours into this game...And still managed a 3.0 average =D
6~ Fable
7~ Golden Sun II : The Lost Age (GBA)
8~ Golden Sun (GBA)
After that, it's just 10s and 10s of "meh".

well hard to choose the better rpg  Wink

I would say...mmmhhh...

Planescape: Torment - for the storyline
Arcanum - for the roleplay aspect (almost every single quest can be beaten in different way and need of a moral decision )

and obviously Wink

TES series - for the amazing lore behind

My favorite RPG, even though its fairly old, has to be Final Fantasy VII.

The story line is great and it never really gets old.
This is like my third replay.

I also love Final Fantasy Tactics. Most of those games are pretty good, but VII is still my favorite.

Below Oblivion and Morrowind, there's...
Final Fantasy! I just love the tenth one. But I haven't played the seventh quite yet. And Kingdom Hearts, which I should be playing instead of more Oblivion at the moment. I love Diablo II, now! XD But I ususally play that on Battle.net anyway...
...LAWL, I haven't really played a lot of single player RPGs.

Yay, more FFVII fans!  Don't much care for any of the others, sadly.  Even FFX was sort-of meh.  Neverwinter Nights was cool, though I didn't play it for nearly as long as I did Morrowind.

I liked that too. I preferred WarCraft II, though.

Unfortunately, neither of those is an RPG. They're RTS.

Overlord is an RPG.  It does have some RTS elements due to the fact that you have Minions, but it is played from the perspective of your main character, the Overlord.  You should check it out.

Other then Morrowind
I would say the Dungeon Siege games,
Now if only Bethesda would add a MP choice to TES it would be perfect. Like DS II, let players decide weather to play mp or not.
