Elder Scrolls novels: yay or nay?

I haven't read them but I hear good things.

It's set far in the future and sheds light on the direction(s) the next TES game might go. That's all pure speculation but I happen to find that fun by itself.

I'm not much of a reader so I probably won't be buying it.

I think there's only one book right now, right?

Don't order one due to expensive international shipping, but I will as soon as I'll be able to - some good expectations on those novels since author is well-credited and shouldn't spoil the universe.

Novelizations don't usually impact "main" franchise (in this case, games). I doubt that novel storylines will affect games in any way other than mentions in books and rumors. Game designers will be interested in developing their own stories.

That's a good point that I and many others haven't taken into account.

My thinking, however, was that these novels set a new foundation for a completely reimagined Tamriel set far in the future, beyond these novels. The many world-changing events described in the book already require the entire province of Morrowind to be completely changed if they ever make it into another game set after the novels. I have a feeling more changes are yet to come. Of course, the first novel happens to be set far enough into the future that they could trick us all and make the next game a prequel to the books.

I don't remember for sure, but I think Bethesda has said that the events in the book are 'canon'. It may still be as you say and the information in the books is merely mentioned, if it affects the game at all but I think there is an advantage of changing the world so completely. It would almost be like starting over and they'd be free to change the nature of countries, races, cultures, and many other things that would have been set in stone by earlier lore.

I agree that the events in the books will probably not happen at the same time as the next game(s).

I have bought the Infernal City on amazon (took almost 3 weeks to  arrive) and so far it is quite good. Im not going to reveal anything though. As you probably already know most of  Morrowind has been destroyed   by the Ministry of Truth crashing into Vivec city due to Vivec's dissapearance. I learned quite a few things about Morrowind, Black Marsh and The Ministry of Truth. The book also revealed a bit about the hist, Khajiit and about what happened in Black Marsh during the Oblvion crisis,
which is something I would like the next game to be about albeit in Highrock.0

All in all I would recommend the book, though it is shorter than I expected (288 pages).
